Safe Shelter Services
Currently, there are two safe shelters for women and girls at Orkesumet town and Lekrimuni village. The one at Orkesumet in Simanjaro is estimated to accommodate 100 girls/women upon completion. Apart from offering temporary shelter for survivors of FGM and child marriage, it will serve various purposed in the protection and empowerment of women and girls.
Further, the Shelters will coordinate girls’ protection services from the grassroots whereby village girls’ protection groups will communicate with the Protection Team at the shelter for prompt responses on any threat or potential violence against girls. The shelters will network with teachers and local government leaders for any information on consistency in school attendance of girls for appropriate action.
Girls in boarding schools who feel insecure to go home during vacation will be sheltered at these centers. However, they will be assigned to stay with their families and community from time to time to share their experience in school.
Lekrimuni Safe Shelter is also a day care with 3 classrooms. Children below 6 years both girls and boys have the opportunity to interact while learning the basics in education. NAFGEM uses the opportunity to meet with parents and guardians to discuss child protection issues including abandoning the FGM practice.
