Female Circumcisers and TBAs Ending FGM
Through community members including children in schools, the female circumcisers are identified and invited for 4 days training on women health, the anatomy and physiology of female genital organs, women’s human rights, FGM and the associated complications. They also have chance to discuss and agree on alternative rights of passage.
Before the government disallowed the TBAs to conduct deliveries in the village, NAFGEM trained some TBAs and supplied them with basic delivery kits. Since these are influential community members especially to women and girls, NAFGEM finds it necessary to properly engage them in activities which will make the shift from harming women to more positive socio-economic activities.
NAFGEM has so far trained 520 TBAs and female circumciser in the 7 districts of Kilimanjaro region and Simanjiro. At the end of the training, these women make declarations not to continue with the practice any more. In several occasions, NAFGEM organized public ceremonies to receive tools used by the circumcisers who decide to lay down the practice. A follow up has been conducted to some for them to ensure compliance. They are engaged into other socio-economic activities for them not to become tempted and turn back. The activity should be continued and expanded into areas with similar traditions.
